A 5mm solid mild steel hotplate, designed and manufactured in Australia to suit every fire pit we've ever made — past and present. Flat, even heat across the whole face: bacon and eggs, pancakes, onions, smash burgers, anything that wants a proper griddle.

Mounts on the cooking set's centre rod and swings in over the coals or back out to serve, and clamps up or down to match the fire.

What it does well
 

• Real thermal mass. At 5mm thick it comes up to an even heat and holds it when cold food hits the surface, instead of dropping away like thin pressed cookware.
• Seasons like cast iron. Australian mild steel builds a slick, non-stick patina that only gets better with use — the reason we chose it over stainless, which sticks and never seasons.
• Swings and lifts. Pivots in over the heat and back out again, and sets to the height the fire's asking for.
• Fits every Core Earth fire pit. Mounts through the laser-cut hole built into all our models.

You'll need the centre rod

This plate mounts on the 304 stainless centre rod. If you already own one of our cooking sets, you're set. If not, you'll need the rod to use it — or grab the full set below and save.

Australian mild steel, 5mm thick. We tried stainless for our cooking surfaces and rejected it — food sticks and it never develops the seasoning that makes outdoor cooking easy. Mild steel, seasoned once and looked after, cooks beautifully for decades.
 

Looking after it: season before first use, wipe with oil after each cook, no dishwasher, don't scrub the seasoning off.

We're a small Australian manufacturer based in Somersby, NSW. We make things out of steel because steel, done properly, outlives almost everything else in a garden or a home.
 

This cooking set came from using our own fire pits and wanting to do more with them. So we built the surfaces we actually wanted to cook on — and chose the materials by what works over the fire, not what's cheapest or flashiest to list.
