Tree Rings · Rolled to diameter

Tree Rings

3mm and 6mm BlueScope steel, rolled to a true circle — not bolted up from straight segments. Every ring opens so it goes around a tree that's already in the ground. Corten rusts to a deep orange-brown and holds; galvanised stays silver, and both are priced the same.

Every ring comes in a choice of heights as well — 80mm to 600mm. Taller rings hold more soil and mulch.

For most gardens — 3mm

Plenty of steel for a garden bed or a lawn. This is what nearly everyone buys.

Heavy duty — 6mm

Twice the steel. Driveways, carparks, stock yards — anywhere a heavy wheel is going to find it.

Before you buy anything rusty

There's no clever way to make 1.6mm last.

Weathering steel earns its reputation above the ground, where it wets and dries and seals itself into that deep orange-brown. Below the soil it's quieter about it, so what's buried lasts on the strength of how much steel was there to start with. At 3mm and 6mm that's a non-issue — there's more material down there than the job will ever ask for. At 1.6mm the margin is gone, and no amount of clever marketing puts it back.

Two questions settle it. What's the thickness, and does it arrive ready to bolt? We've been rolling these in Somersby since 2020. What's turned up since tends to be 1.6mm, with a bag of screws and instructions to drill it together on your knees. If a listing won't state the gauge, that's your answer.

Two bolts and you're done

Watch one go in.

Real time, no cuts. The brackets find each other, the bolts go in by hand, and the drill never leaves the shed.

  • No drilling. The brackets are welded in at our end.
  • Stainless bolts supplied. Nothing to source, nothing to match.
  • One person, a few minutes. Two of you if it's a 1910.

Why ours look different

A true circle. Not bolted up from straight bits.

Plenty of tree rings are a ring in name only — six or eight straight segments flanged together, and you can count the corners from the kitchen window. Ours go through the rolls, so the curve is continuous the whole way round.

Up to 960mm the ring is rolled from one piece and split once, so it opens around a tree that's already in the ground. 1520mm and 1910mm come as two halves — six metres of steel in a single hoop isn't something you'd want on a truck, let alone carry down the side of the house. Either way the brackets are welded inside: a couple of stainless bolts and you're finished. Nothing to drill.
