Same warp-proof engineering, raised for the table. Now the fire glows back — and it cooks a full spread.
The Starry Tall-Jan is our 6mm Corten Tall-Jan with two things going for it beyond the standard pit: walls laser-cut with a field of stars that the fire glows through after dark, and the built-in mounting point that turns it into a proper outdoor kitchen with our Cookout cooking kit.
Everything underneath is the Tall-Jan you already know: 6mm plate steel, our proprietary warp-proof base, flat-packed and slot-together — just standing taller off the ground.
Why the base matters
Almost every fire pit on the market eventually warps. Repeated heating and cooling cycles distort the base, the floor sags or domes, the geometry goes wrong, and within a few years you're staring at a piece of expensive deformed steel.
We spent serious R&D time solving this. We tested gauges thicker than 6mm — they didn't fix the problem. We tested base layouts, support patterns, expansion-relief geometries. The design we landed on is our own, proprietary, and it works. The base stays flat. The geometry stays true. The pit you light tonight will sit the same way ten years from now.
If you've owned a fire pit before and watched the floor distort within two seasons, this is the engineering decision that separates our pit from almost everything else in the market.
The starry walls
The star pattern isn't a sticker, a stencil, or a coating — it's cut clean through 6mm plate. After dark the fire shows through every cut and the warm light spills out the sides instead of staying trapped in the bowl. It's the difference between sitting around a fire and sitting inside the glow of one.
The honest trade-off: a fire pit with open walls radiates some of its heat and light sideways rather than straight up. On a 6mm Corten pit that holds heat the way this one does, you won't be cold — but if pure radiant warmth on a frozen night is all you want and you don't care about the look, the solid-wall Tall-Jan does that job for less money. This one's for people who want the fire to be part of the view.
6mm Corten — the right material for fire
Corten weathering steel is the natural choice for a fire pit. It handles repeated heating and cooling without the coating-failure issues that plague painted steel — there's no paint to bubble, blister, peel, or off-gas the first time you build a serious fire. The steel develops its protective rust patina over the first few weeks outdoors and from there, it's effectively maintenance-free.
At 6mm thick, this is in a different category to mass-market fire pits sold at 3mm or thinner. Heavier-gauge steel holds heat longer, retains structural integrity through countless burn cycles, and reads as architectural rather than disposable. 350MPa BlueScope REDCOR® steel — the same grade specified in bridges and public sculpture.
Why tall-jan?
The Tall-Jan sits 430mm tall — deliberately raised off the ground.
Higher fire pits suit higher seating. If you're gathered around an outdoor dining setting, bar stools, or you're standing with a drink in hand, a taller pit reads correctly in the space — the fire sits up in your sight line where you can see it and feel it, instead of disappearing below the table edge. The extra height also brings the cooking surfaces up to a comfortable working level when you've got the Cookout kit running.
If your seating is lower — camp chairs, garden benches, beanbags, or a low-slung lounge setup — the Starry Low-Rider is the same pit and the same stars, sitting closer to the ground for relaxed, low-seated nights.
Turns into a full outdoor kitchen
Every fire pit we build has a laser-cut mounting hole in the base — and it's there for a reason. Drop the 1-metre 304 stainless rod from our Firepit Cookout Bundle straight through it, and the Starry Tall-Jan becomes a serious cook-out rig — and at this height, you're cooking standing up at a comfortable working level rather than crouched over the coals:
Each surface swings in over the fire and back out again, and clamps up or down the pole so you can dial the heat to whatever the fire's doing — high and gentle for a simmer, low and hard for a sear. It's a complete outdoor cooking setup, not just a fire pit. (Prefer the classic approach? Our Tramontina cooking swords still push into the ground around the pit for Argentinian-style slow roasting over the coals.)
Flat-pack — here for winter, gone for summer
The Starry Tall-Jan arrives flat-packed in 9 pieces — slots together in about a minute with no tools required. Disassembles just as fast.
Most fire pits live outdoors year-round, taking up patio or lawn real estate through summer when no one's lighting them. Our flat-pack design means you stack it flat against a wall or in the shed when fire-pit season ends, and reassemble it in 60 seconds when the weather turns. Same pit, half the visual footprint when you don't need it.
It also means shipping costs less, delivery is easier, and you can move it between properties or take it camping without hiring a trailer. Having said that, it's just as happy to be a permanent feature of your space.
Built to last, made to move
What you're paying for
The Starry Tall-Jan costs more than the solid-wall version, and we'll tell you exactly why: it's the cut time. Every star is laser-cut individually, and that's machine hours we don't spend on the plain pit. The steel is the same, the base is the same, the engineering is the same. You're paying for the pattern and the glow — nothing else is dressed up in the price.
Both are the same fire pit at the same 6mm Corten spec — the difference is height off the ground, and which one suits depends entirely on where you're sitting.
Tall-Jan — 430mm tall Best for elevated seating: outdoor dining settings, bar stools, standing groups, or raised lounge setups. The fire sits in your sight line at entertaining height, and cooking over it at standing height is genuinely comfortable.
Low-Rider version — 260mm tall Best for low seating: camp chairs, benches, beanbags, low outdoor lounge setups. The fire sits in your sight line at relaxed-seating height.

The Tall-Jan is fabricated from 6mm BlueScope REDCOR® — Australia's premium weathering steel, the same material used in architectural cladding, bridges, and public sculpture.
REDCOR® is engineered to rust on purpose. When exposed to the elements, it develops a dense, tightly-bonded patina that actively seals the surface and stops corrosion from penetrating deeper. No paint. No coating. No flaking. The rust is the protection — and unlike painted fire pits, there's nothing to bubble, blister, or off-gas the first time you build a serious fire in it.
At 350MPa tensile strength and 6mm gauge, this is structural-grade steel — substantially heavier than the 3mm-or-thinner pits common in the category. Heavier steel holds radiant heat longer, resists warping better, and reads as a permanent landscape piece rather than a disposable garden accessory.
Your pit ships in raw silver steel and develops a rich, even rust patina over the first few weeks outdoors. From there it's maintenance-free for the life of the product.
The Tall-Jan arrives flat — which matters for three reasons:
Shipping cost. Flat-pack ships in a far smaller carton than an assembled fire pit could, which keeps freight sensible across Australia.
Seasonal storage. Fire pits live outdoors year-round in most homes, taking up patio or lawn space through summer when nobody's lighting them. Our design lets you disassemble in a minute when the season ends, stack flat against a shed wall, and reassemble just as quickly when the weather turns.
Movement. Camping, holiday-home, taking it to a friend's place — a 9-piece flat-pack pit is genuinely portable in a way assembled pits aren't.
