6mm 'The Tiger Orchid' Flat-Pack Fire Pit — Corten

The Orchid, scaled up. Named after the largest orchid in the world.

The Tiger Orchid is our full-size sculptural fire pit — same three-panel architectural geometry as the Orchid, same 6mm BlueScope REDCOR® plate construction, same proprietary warp-proof base, scaled up to 875mm wide and 475mm tall for larger entertaining spaces.

Named after Grammatophyllum speciosum, the Tiger Orchid — the largest orchid species on earth. Like its namesake, this is the Orchid made monumental: same graceful three-panel form, rendered at a scale that anchors a space rather than accents it.

Why the Tiger Orchid

There's a point where a beautiful small piece stops doing enough work for a large space. A fire pit that looks perfect in a courtyard can read as precious on a broad terrace — sitting in the middle of an expansive entertaining area without holding its own.

The Tiger Orchid solves that. Every element of the Orchid's design discipline is preserved — the three-panel geometry, the crisp outward-angled walls, the crossed base, the absolute restraint of the form — just at a scale that matches bigger architecture, bigger gardens, bigger gatherings. The silhouette that made the Orchid distinctive now becomes architectural.

Same design language. Fully grown.

Why the base matters

Almost every fire pit on the market eventually warps. Repeated heating and cooling cycles distort the base, the floor sags or domes, the geometry goes wrong, and within a few years you're staring at a piece of expensive deformed steel.

We spent serious R&D time solving this. We tested gauges thicker than 6mm — they didn't fix the problem. We tested base layouts, support patterns, expansion-relief geometries. The design we landed on is our own, proprietary, and it works. The Tiger Orchid doesn't warp out of shape across normal residential fire-pit use. The base stays flat. The geometry stays true. The pit you light tonight will sit the same way ten years from now.

On a piece this size where the geometry itself is the design, that engineering matters more than almost anything else. Warping on an Orchid would ruin the whole point — on a Tiger Orchid at nearly a metre wide, it would be impossible to hide. Ours holds.

6mm Corten — the right material for fire

Corten weathering steel is the natural choice for a fire pit. It handles repeated heating and cooling without the coating-failure issues that plague painted steel — there's no paint to bubble, blister, peel, or off-gas the first time you build a serious fire. The steel develops its protective rust patina over the first few weeks outdoors and from there, it's effectively maintenance-free.

At 6mm thick, the Tiger Orchid is in a different category to mass-market fire pits sold at 3mm or thinner. Heavier-gauge steel holds heat longer (better radiant warmth on a cold night), retains structural integrity through countless burn cycles, and reads as architectural rather than disposable. 350MPa BlueScope REDCOR® steel. Same grade specified in bridges and public sculpture.

On the Tiger Orchid specifically, 6mm plate is what makes the larger scale possible. Panels nearly a metre wide would flex, bow, and lose their crisp geometry at thinner gauges. 6mm holds the line across the entire span — which is why the piece reads as sculpture rather than fabrication.

Who this is for

The Tiger Orchid belongs in considered spaces at larger scale.

  • Expansive outdoor entertaining areas — wide terraces, pool decks, large patios where a smaller pit would disappear
  • Architectural homes with generous outdoor space — contemporary builds, designer projects, properties where the outdoor area was planned as seriously as the interior
  • Commercial and hospitality installs — restaurants, boutique hotels, function venues, wineries — where the fire pit needs to hold its own as a feature piece, not blend into the furniture
  • Larger gatherings — extended family, big entertaining, open-air dinners around the fire
  • Anyone who loved the Orchid but needed it bigger — same piece, same design discipline, matched to a bigger space

If your outdoor area is substantial and deserves a genuinely significant piece of steel sculpture at its centre, this is that pit.

Prefer something smaller?

If the Tiger Orchid's scale is too much for your space, our Orchid is the same design in a smaller format — 660mm wide and 320mm tall, 38kg — perfect for courtyards, urban terraces, and more intimate entertaining areas. Same three panels, same four-piece flat-pack, same sculptural discipline. Just scaled for where you actually live.

Flat-pack — four pieces, no tools

The Tiger Orchid arrives flat-packed in just four pieces — three panels and the crossed base. Assembly is intuitive: slot the panels into the base, and the geometry locks itself into position. No tools required. Disassembles as quickly when you don't need it.

At larger scale, flat-pack matters more than ever:

  • Shipping stays practical — freight cost on an assembled sculptural piece nearly a metre across would be substantial. Flat-pack ships at sensible rates Australia-wide
  • Delivery access — through side gates, around property boundaries, up terraced access that an assembled pit would never clear
  • Two-person assembly — the larger panels are heavier than the Orchid's, but still two-person manageable with no specialist equipment
  • Seasonal storage — disassembles flat against a wall through summer, reassembles in minutes when the weather turns

Cooks brilliantly

The open three-panel geometry makes the Tiger Orchid unusually good for cooking — the fire is visible and accessible from every side, and the walls don't cage the heat the way a deep bowl does. At 875mm across the fire bed, there's serious cooking space on this pit.

Pair it with our Tramontina cooking swords — Argentinian-style skewers designed to push into the ground around the fire and cook slow-roast meat over open coals — for an outdoor cooking centrepiece that looks as architectural as it performs.

The design discipline, at scale

Three sides. Four pieces. No ornamentation, no pattern cut-outs, no decoration — the form is the design. At the Tiger Orchid's scale, that restraint carries even more weight. Where a patterned pit the same size could read as busy, the Tiger Orchid's clean geometry lets the sculpture itself fill the space.

The piece works across contemporary, modernist, Mediterranean, Scandinavian, Japandi, and traditional gardens that need one single dominant sculptural element. It doesn't fight its surroundings — at this scale, it defines them.

Material

The Tiger Orchid is fabricated from 6mm BlueScope REDCOR® — Australia's premium weathering steel, the same material used in architectural cladding, bridges, and public sculpture.

REDCOR® is engineered to rust on purpose. When exposed to the elements, it develops a dense, tightly-bonded patina that actively seals the surface and stops corrosion from penetrating deeper. No paint. No coating. No flaking. The rust is the protection — and unlike painted fire pits, there's nothing to bubble, blister, or off-gas the first time you build a serious fire in it.

At 350MPa tensile strength and 6mm gauge, this is structural-grade steel — substantially heavier than the 3mm-or-thinner pits common in the category. Heavier steel holds radiant heat longer, resists warping better, and reads as a permanent landscape piece rather than a disposable garden accessory.

Your pit ships in raw silver steel and develops a rich, even rust patina over the first few weeks outdoors. On the Tiger Orchid, that patina is the whole finish — with no laser-cut motif to frame, the rusted geometry has to do everything. At this scale, a fully-patinated Tiger Orchid sits as a landscape-scale sculptural piece that anchors whatever space it's placed in.

Flat Pack Advantage

The Tiger Orchid arrives flat — four pieces in a single carton — which at this scale is closer to necessity than convenience.

Shipping stays practical. An assembled sculptural piece 875mm across would be expensive and awkward to freight. Flat-pack ships at sensible rates across Australia.

Delivery access. Narrow side gates, stairs, around property boundaries, through tight entry points — a flat-packed pit goes where an assembled Tiger Orchid simply couldn't.

Two-person assembly. Larger panels than the Orchid, but still slot-together with no tools required. Two people can have it assembled and burning in under ten minutes.

Seasonal storage and portability. Disassembles as cleanly as it assembles. Stack it flat for summer, bring it with you if you move, or transport to secondary properties for holiday use.
