6mm 'The Orchid' — Aluminium Camp Fire Pit

8.5kg. Four pieces. The Orchid's sculptural geometry, engineered for the back of your car.

The aluminium version of our Corten Orchid — same three-panel geometry, same four-piece flat-pack, same slot-together assembly, built from specifically-sourced high-temperature aluminium to drop the weight from 38kg to 8.5kg without sacrificing the design.

This is a camping fire pit that doesn't look like a camping fire pit. No folding mesh, no spindly legs, no collapsing grate — just the Orchid's crisp sculptural silhouette, scaled for travel.

Designed for travel, not permanence

Let's be upfront about this, because it matters.

The aluminium Orchid is engineered specifically for portable, occasional use — camping trips, holiday properties, beach sites, festivals, mates' places, anywhere you want a genuinely beautiful fire pit without committing to lugging a 40kg piece of steel.

We've done extensive testing, and for its intended use case it handles beautifully. The high-temperature aluminium grade we source takes the heat of a normal campfire without deforming. We've run it full of coals through proper burn cycles and it holds up exactly as designed.

But aluminium is not steel. For daily, year-round, at-home use — multiple burns a week, serious cooking coals, decades of expected life — the right product is our Corten Orchid. Same design, same geometry, made from 6mm REDCOR® plate steel built to last indefinitely with no thermal-cycling limits.

The aluminium Orchid is for getting the Orchid out into the world with you — not for sitting on your patio through a decade of weekly burns. Pick the material that matches how you'll actually use it, and either choice will do what it's asked to do brilliantly.

For camping, nothing else comes close

At 8.5kg complete, the aluminium Orchid fits in the back of almost any car, disassembled into four flat pieces that stack together. No specialty roof rack, no trailer, no cargo barrier. It slides into a ute tub, a station wagon, a 4WD load area, or the boot of a hatchback.

Assembly takes under a minute. Slot the three panels into the crossed base and the geometry locks itself into position. No tools. No hardware to lose. No fiddling in the dark after a day's driving.

Compared to what's normally available in a camping fire pit:

  • Folding mesh pits — flimsy, short-lived, and cheap-looking
  • Bucket-style pits — functional but unremarkable, and usually heavier than this
  • DIY fire rings — fine in designated sites, useless everywhere else
  • The aluminium Orchid — sculpture that packs flat. Friends and campground neighbours will ask where you got it.

Same design discipline as the Corten

The aluminium Orchid inherits everything that makes the Corten version distinctive — the three-panel geometry, the outward-angled walls that open the fire to view from every side, the asymmetric silhouette, the clean negative space.

Disassembled, it stacks flat and takes up almost no space in storage. Assembled, it looks like a piece of designed steel sculpture — not camping gear. That matters more than people realise when they're setting up a site: a fire pit that looks considered elevates the whole feel of the space around it.

Why aluminium (and why this specific grade)

Most aluminium can't handle direct fire. It softens, deforms, and eventually fails under sustained heat — which is why aluminium cookware has sealed bases and why most backyard aluminium products stay firmly away from open flame.

The grade we source for this pit is different. It's a specifically higher-temperature alloy, chosen after extensive testing specifically for this application. We've burned the pit full of coals through proper campfire cycles — no melting, no warping, no failure. It holds up.

That said, we're going to be direct: aluminium has thermal limits that steel doesn't. Use the pit the way it's designed — a normal camping fire, reasonable fuel load, proper burn cycle, cool down properly before packing — and it performs. Try to turn it into a steelworks-grade forge, run enormous blazes through it nightly, or leave it sitting in coals for hours on end for years at a stretch, and you'll find its limits. Steel doesn't have those limits. Aluminium does. That's the trade for the weight savings.

For the product's intended purpose — portable, occasional, genuinely beautiful — it's exactly right.

Material

The aluminium Orchid is fabricated from a specifically-sourced 6mm high-temperature aluminium alloy, chosen after extensive testing specifically for fire-pit use.

The short version: normal aluminium can't handle campfire heat. This grade can. We've done the testing to prove it.

The longer version: aluminium alloys vary enormously in their thermal tolerance. The grade we source for this pit has a substantially higher melting point and better heat-cycling performance than standard aluminium products. At 6mm thick, the pit carries enough material to absorb and dissipate campfire heat without reaching failure temperatures under normal use.

What aluminium does brilliantly is weight. At roughly one-third the density of steel, an 8.5kg aluminium Orchid carries exactly the same sculptural presence as its 38kg Corten counterpart — without requiring two people to lift it or a trailer to transport it.

What aluminium doesn't do is last like steel. No marketing claim should pretend otherwise. Corten steel is the right material for a permanent fire pit at your home. Aluminium is the right material for a fire pit that travels with you. Both are correct. Pick the one that fits how you'll use it.

Flat Pack Advantage

The aluminium Orchid is the most portable piece we make.

8.5kg total. Assembled, disassembled, or in the carton — it's the weight of a bag of firewood. One person carries it. Any car transports it.

Flat disassembly. Four flat pieces stack together and slide into any load area. Under the back seat of a small car if you need. No specialty storage required.

Under a minute to set up. Slot-together geometry means site-ready in less time than it takes to unzip a tent.

Pack down just as fast. Cool it down properly, pull the panels out of the base, stack them flat, and go.
